Shortly before becoming Technical Services Manager at BAL, David was given the opportunity to join the TTA Technical Committee back in 2005.  It was then and still is a great learning experience and privilege for David to have the opportunity to work with fellow technical experts within our industry and to contribute in some small way towards producing the many varied technical papers which detail industry best practice, and provides advice on a wide range of subjects with respect to ceramic tiling.

Following her promotion to UK Head of Customer Services in 2021, Stacey has successfully integrated customer service and order management teams at Building Adhesives Ltd in Stoke-on-Trent and ARDEX UK in Haverhill, while facing major raw materials shortages, COVID restrictions and force majeures. Despite these challenging conditions, she has helped deliver record orders for customers as well as ensuring end-users are supported with technical and product enquiries now fed into a joint team.

Through a mix of hard work and training, Adrian O’Clements has refined his skills over the years to become one of the country’s top large format tile fixers. Always with a ‘hands-on’ approach, he relishes the technical challenges involved with large format tiles, and also the satisfaction he gets from delivering an excellent job for his customers. He is now keen to put his commitment to training into practice, working with TTA to help deliver training on tiling techniques.

Alfie joined WB Simpson & Sons (Midlands) Ltd in 2020 as an apprentice tiler, he quickly showed he was a keen and adaptable learner and as a company we have been confident enough in his ability to use Alfie on some of the most prestigious projects we have been working on. He has an excellent attitude towards work, to work colleagues and to clients, showing he has natural ability we are confident he will develop into a highly skilled tiler and Alfie is now also going to represent the industry at SkillBuild this year.

Best Commercial Project (Large) Winner 2022: Center Parcs, Nottinghamshire, The Great Northern Tiling Company

Nominated for ‘Best Commercial Project (Large)’ 2022 is Center Parcs, Nottinghamshire, installation by The Great Northern Tiling Company (GNTC).  The project was a refurb of the sub-tropical swimming paradise, an iconic facility at the site and the centre piece of the family resort.  Its value was £350k and the size was approx. 500m².

In central Birmingham Three Snow Hill is an Ultra-Modern 17 storey 38000m2 office building.

Works to Cat A Base Build, landlord fit out and major Cat B fit out for BT Regional Hub were completed respectively by BAM Construction Ltd, ADT Workplace Ltd and Overbury plc.

Being previously involved in ‘One’ and ‘Two Snow Hill’ major works WB Simpsons (Midlands) are proud to have carried tiling works on all three elements of this prestigious development, maintained working relationship throughout each phase completed to the satisfaction of both contractor and client.

Best Heritage Project Winner 2022: Edwardian Tile Restoration, Penylan, Cardiff, Victorian Tiling Wales

Best Heritage Project Award – L to R Mike McCann, Nicholas Puckey

Victorian Tiling Wales, (A division of Pontcanna Tiling Ltd) were tasked with restoring the original hallway for a prominent period property in Penylan, Cardiff. In need of extensive repairs and for the large missing section to the rear to be seamlessly tiled to match. The resulting hallway is one of our most successful restorations to date and has returned the wow factor to the entrance that this property deserves.

Best Domestic Project Winner 2022 – Lytham House, Wakerly House, Hunters Meadow, Pro-Tilers UK Wall & Floor Ltd

The works carried out on these bathrooms were using various tile sizes ranging from 3200x1600x6mm to 1200x600x10mm porcelain. The steam room area is a favourite of ours as the back story for this is very touching for us and gave us a large challenge. The 3200×1600 bathroom was also challenging as we had an exact amount of tiles and the visuals for this that we had to follow were spot on with no room for any error.

A stunning swimming pool, jacuzzi, spa, massage room and changing rooms were completed in Staffordshire using a full ARDEX fixing solution. The 590m2 project features a spectacular 3D feature wall with cut-in fountains, a metallic mosaic jacuzzi and changing rooms. A very labour intensive project, the contract carried out all the render, screed works, hand built steam room, formed experience showers, massage room and high-end changing room.

Best Innovation Winner 2022 – RAK Ceramics – Klima

Klima is a new generation ceramic that, thanks to special materials, is able to absorb and repel heat according to individual needs. Suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications, for flooring or external walls, to achieve maximum comfort with minimum energy impact.

Best Environmental Initiative Winner 2022 – UltraTile

UltraTile is nominating the latest achievement of their environmental objectives, as well as their new 3771m² solar energy farm for this year’s ‘Best Environmental Initiative’ award.  We are now using 5000 tonnes of recycled materials in our products.  We own CNG trucks and boast green technology use for 27% of company car vehicles.  What’s more, our carbon footprint has improved by 16%.  Following the installation of a new solar energy farm, our prediction calculations demonstrate that this will result in a power saving reduction of between 12 – 17%, which is 36,000kw per month at least.

Attending the Offsite Expo in 2021 was our first venture into a relatively unexplored market for us. Making our products easy to understand was the main driver for our stand design, which showcased two working bathroom pods that visitors could explore. Sustainability also played its part with most elements being reused or recycled. Subsequent follow-up meetings with visitors to our stand suggest that we will achieve a return on our investment.
